Brazilian Bridge Collapse Kills Two, Injures 19

An overpass under construction in Belo Horizonte, Brazil collapsed last Thursday killing two people and injuring 19 others. The bridge collapsed while vehicles were driving below the overpass and a commuter bus, two construction trucks, and one car were struck by the falling span. The video embedded under Media below shows the bridge overpass collapsing. 

The bridge is located just three miles from the Mineirao Stadium that will host one of the World Cup Semi-final matches tomorrow. No tourists were reported among the injured.  The overpass was supposed to be completed in time for the World Cup, however construction issues delayed the project.  It was intended to accommodate the extra busses that would be running during the month-long World Cup. Brazilian officials launched an investigation into the cause of the collapse, but it is unclear at this point what led to the span’s failure.
