A powerful magnitude 6.9 earthquake struck central Philippines late on September 30, centered offshore near Bogo City in northern Cebu province. The earthquake, with an estimated depth of about 5 km, produced severe shaking across Visayas and caused widespread structural damage, casualties, and service disruptions.
In Cebu province, at least 69 people have died and 147 have been injured, there due to collapsing walls, falling debris, and landslides, according to statements from the Philippine government and disaster agencies. The earthquake also damaged bridges, roads, public facilities, and electrical infrastructure.
Among the localities reporting incidents of collapse and damage are San Remigio, where parts of a sports complex gave way during a game, claiming lives including of coast guard personnel and a child; Medellin; Tabuelan; and Daanbantayan, all in northern Cebu. Responding to the disaster, national agencies have mobilized relief efforts and structural inspections. President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. pledged government support, and cabinet secretaries have been dispatched to coordinate response measures. Several affected municipalities have declared states of calamity to fast-track the release of funds and resources.
Classes and government work have been suspended in many areas pending safety assessments of buildings and infrastructure. Officials have encouraged residents to avoid returning to damaged structures until inspections conclude.
The shock came shortly after a major storm had affected parts of central Philippines, compounding stress on infrastructure already weakened by flooding and wind damage.
