The main island of the Philippines experienced a 6.3 magnitude earthquake on Thursday, according to authorities. Fortunately, no casualties or significant damage were reported following the quake.
The seismic activity occurred at a depth of 10 kilometers (6.21 miles) in the sea and was felt in nearby provinces as confirmed by the Philippine seismology agency. Initially recorded as a magnitude 6.2 earthquake, while the seismology agency later revised it to 6.3 and anticipates aftershocks and possible damage.
The quake caused the suspension of certain railway operations in the capital city of Manila. More specifically, the transport ministry stated that the elevated railway lines in Manila had to halt their operations due to the earthquake. While some shaking of ceiling lights was observed at a hotel in a business district where President Ferdinand Marcos Jr was present, no major effects have been reported so far, according to the Civil Defense spokesperson.
The mayor of Calatagan, a town near the epicenter, mentioned that the quake was disorienting and instructed the town's engineering department to assess any potential damage.
