Concrete structures are constructions that utilize concrete as the primary building material. Concrete is a versatile and widely used material in construction due to its resilience, resistance, strength, and ability to take on various shapes and forms. Concrete structures can be found in a wide range of applications, from residential buildings and bridges to commercial complexes and infrastructure projects. Concrete is composed of cement, aggregates (such as sand and gravel), water, and sometimes additives or admixtures to enhance specific properties like workability and strength. The combination of concrete and steel creates a composite material that can handle both compression and tension forces effectively, i.e. reinforced concrete. Furthermore, pre-stressed concrete, which is used in a number of structures, involves pre-loading the concrete with tension before applying the load, increasing its load-bearing capacity and reducing cracking. In all, concrete offers a balance between structural integrity and design flexibility and hence it remains the most common material in any kind of construction.
