On August 14, 2024, the rail lift bridge located near the International Falls Minnesota, and Fort Frances, Ontario and is spanning above US-Canada boarder collapsed. Authorities stated that the repairs have already started but it’s not certain when they will be completed. Furthermore, the water traffic has been already restored.
As of present, according to the Minneapolis Star Tribune the cause of the collapse is not known yet and an investigation is undergoing. However, the authorities had excluded any trains that were involved. Fortunately, no injuries were reported, even if a small amount of non-toxic hydraulic oil was expelled in the river. Authorities added that environmental teams promptly arrived at the site and started the efforts to contain the spill.
It should be noted that the bridge was built in 1908 and was known as Rainy River Rail Lift Bridge, while it stands as the international boundary because it flows from Lake of the Woods to Rainy Lake. When the river traffic required it was swinging up, allowing the boats to cross.
