New Road Bridge Over River Clyde Opened on May 9

On May 9, 2025, a new road bridge spanning the River Clyde was officially opened to the public, marking the first such crossing since the Squinty Bridge opened in 2006. The Renfrew Bridge connects the town of Renfrew with Yoker and Clydebank on the river’s north side. It forms part of the £117 million Clyde Waterfront and Renfrew Riverside project, jointly funded by the Scottish and UK governments through the Glasgow City Region Deal.

The project also includes new road infrastructure and cycling routes to improve connectivity along the waterfront. The bridge was constructed by engineering firm Graham, with major structural components manufactured in the Netherlands and transported to the site by barge.

The 184-meter-long structure features two lanes for vehicular traffic and dedicated paths for pedestrians and cyclists. It is the first road bridge over the Clyde designed to open for the passage of large vessels.

This is the second bridge to open in the area in 2025, following the earlier inauguration of a pedestrian-only bridge linking Govan and Partick. The Renfrew Bridge is expected to improve access to the Advanced Manufacturing Innovation District currently under development near Glasgow Airport.
