A bridge in Michigan that was previously in regular use was destroyed after the Boardman River reached record-high levels. In Traverse City, floodwaters rose over the bridge deck, covering the roadway before the structure was ultimately washed away.
Officials reported that the bridge in Grand Traverse County, which typically carries significant daily traffic, collapsed on Tuesday night. The flooding followed a period of sustained heavy rainfall combined with rapid snowmelt across the Great Lakes region, contributing to elevated river levels in parts of Michigan and Wisconsin and resulting in damage to infrastructure.
In response to the flooding, Grand Traverse County authorities declared a local state of emergency. Several roads have been closed, and infrastructure systems have been affected, including the Beitner Road bridge. Local officials indicated that repair work may take an extended period and that low-lying areas near rivers and creeks are expected to remain impacted by flooding.
According to data from the National Weather Service, the Boardman River exceeded its previous recorded level. While the earlier crest reached 7.03 feet in September 2023, the river rose to 7.91 feet on April 14. The Beitner Park bridge failed later that night, rendering the crossing unusable.
Authorities have installed barricades in surrounding areas to redirect traffic away from the damaged crossing. Traverse City has also recorded higher-than-average rainfall since March 1, contributing to current conditions.
Flood damage across the region has been reported, and recovery efforts are ongoing as conditions continue to be monitored. Flood warnings remain in effect for several counties in northern Michigan through April 19. Meteorological assessments indicate that the flooding is associated with persistent weather patterns that have contributed to sustained moisture inflow into the region.
