Ghana is preparing to begin construction of the Volivo Bridge, a major infrastructure project expected to become the tallest road bridge in the country, following high-level talks with the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA).
Roads and Highways Minister Kwame Agbodza described his meeting with Yushi Nagano, JICA’s Head of Africa Investment, as very encouraging. He said he hopes President Mahama will officially launch the project later this year with a groundbreaking ceremony.
The bridge will span 540m and feature a cable-stayed design, with a 280-meter main span supported by 51-meter-high towers. It will include two traffic lanes, pedestrian walkways, and safety barriers. Once completed, it will be 200 meters longer than the Adomi Bridge while it is expected to greatly improve transport links between the Volta and Oti regions, enhancing trade, mobility, and economic integration across the area.
The Volivo Bridge is set to break several national records, including the tallest bridge towers and the longest cable-stayed span in Ghana. The latter makes it a standout engineering landmark along the Eastern Corridor. Furthermore, JICA’s participation highlights Japan’s continued support for infrastructure development in Africa, offering financial backing, technical expertise, and project management assistance.
Japan has a long history of partnering with African countries on major infrastructure projects, particularly in roads, bridges, and urban transport, with a focus on sustainability and advanced engineering standards. With construction slated to begin this year, the Volivo Bridge is expected to strengthen domestic connectivity while standing as a symbol of Ghana’s engineering ambition and successful international cooperation. The project is also likely to set a benchmark for future large-scale infrastructure developments in Ghana.
