At least five people have died after a three-storey building under construction collapsed on Saturday morning in the Durumi 3 area near Gudu Market, within the Abuja Municipal Area Council of the Federal Capital Territory.
According to Lere Olayinka, spokesperson for the FCT Minister, at least 10 people were rescued alive from the rubble. He provided updates on the incident on Saturday.
Olayinka also said that Dr Adedolapo Fasawe, the Mandate Secretary of the Health Services and Environment Secretariat of the Federal Capital Territory Administration, visited the scene. According to the statement, FCT Minister Nyesom Wike directed that victims of the collapse receive free medical treatment.
Rescue operations were still ongoing as emergency workers searched for more people believed to be trapped under the rubble. Personnel from the Federal Fire Service, healthcare workers, security operatives, and local volunteers were involved in the rescue efforts.
The incident occurred only months after another building under construction collapsed in Jikwoyi, also within the AMAC area, where six people were injured in April.
