Athens, Greece: Building collapsed after explosion

According to the Greek emergency services, on Friday, September 25, a building in central Athens, located in one of the city’s oldest and most popular neighborhood, collapsed after a powerful explosion. Local media reported that two people were trapped beneath the debris; however, they were not seriously injured and were transferred to hospital for medical treatment.

The cause of the explosion that led to the collapse is not yet known. However, officials suggest that a gas leak might have caused the incident. At present, an investigation is underway to determine the exact cause. It should be noted that the explosion was loud enough to be heard across the Greek capital. 

In addition, according to the Fire Service, nearby buildings were also damaged by the blast. A fire broke out shortly after the explosion, and firefighters worked to bring it under control. Meanwhile, emergency teams inspected the damaged building and assessed the surrounding structures to determine whether there was any risk of further collapse.

In all, the explosion caused considerable confusion in the area, prompting a large police response. Officers quickly cordoned off Lysikratous Street to protect residents and passers-by and to allow emergency crews to work safely.
