Building collapse in Ga South Municipality: two fatalities, three people in critical condition

Two people have been confirmed dead following the collapse of an one-storey building in Amanfrom Assemblies, a suburb of Amanfrom in the Ga South Municipality, on July 4. The building's owner was reported to have died instantly, while another person passed away on Wednesday morning.The remaining three individuals, who sustained severe injuries, were initially taken to the Kasoa Polyclinic but have since been transferred to the Winneba Trauma and Specialist Hospital for treatment.

The incident occurred at approximately 2:00PM, trapping five people, including the building owner, two employees of the Restoration Healthcare and Birth Centre, and two five-year-old children. According to an eyewitness at the scene, the ground trembled briefly, allowing passers-by to escape, but those underneath the building were unable to free themselves.

Marcel Kwame Avedo, the Municipal Fire Commander D03, expressed difficulties faced by his team and the ambulance service in rescuing the victims due to the lack of access roads at the scene. Preliminary investigations suggest that the building was situated in a waterlogged area. He cautioned land developers against haphazard construction in communities to ensure that areas designated for road construction remain reserved.
