A building partly collapsed in Montreal North on Saturday. Five individuals were inside the building at the time of the incident while one fatality and two injuries were confirmed. Authorities said that the collapse occurred at approximately 4 p.m. in a structure that appeared to be under construction.
The deceased man's body was discovered just after 10 p.m. and paramedics confirmed his death at the scene. The other two men have suffered severe injuries, but no additional information regarding their condition has been provided by the police.
The Montreal fire department has noted that the front portion of the building had been vacant due to a fire, that occurred a few years ago, although it appeared that renovation work was in progress.
The building, ten apartments and two businesses, was evacuated pending confirmation of its safety by a structural engineer while Quebec's workplace safety board (CNESST) will be conducting an inquiry into the circumstances surrounding the fatal incident.
