On Friday, 7th of June, a three-storey building under construction collapsed in the Ukwa West Local Government Area of Abia State, Nigeria, located in the south-east region. Local authorities stated that at the time of the collapse, five workers were at the site. Three of them, who were working on the ground floor, were considered trapped beneath the rubble, while the other two, who were working on the roof, managed to escape.
Furthermore, authorities announced that for the efforts to rescue those who were trapped, the rescue team used heavy-duty equipment for excavation. As of now, the exact cause of the collapse is not known. However, building expert Engr. Chinedu Okwara argues that the collapse may have occurred due to construction and engineering problems associated with the building's design, combined with the use of poor-quality materials.
It should be mentioned that the building’s owner is reportedly out of the country, having left his siblings in charge of supervising the project.
