Manhattan building evacuated after structural issues raise safety concerns

What happened to the building on Tuesday?
Emergency crews responded to reports of structural problems at a Midtown Manhattan building shortly before 8 a.m. EDT on Tuesday after witnesses noticed bricks falling from the 21st floor. When firefighters arrived, they found that two support columns had begun to buckle, prompting officials to evacuate the building along with several nearby properties as a safety precaution.

Cliff Johnsen, a representative for the Steamfitters Local 638 Union, described the situation as serious, saying the building's north side was deteriorating and that some of the support beams were bending under pressure. Metro Loft Management, the company overseeing the building's residential conversion, said it is cooperating with the New York City Department of Buildings to assess the extent of the damage.

Later that day, MetroLoft founder Nathan Berman sought to reassure the public, stating that the structure was never in danger of a complete collapse. He characterized the incident as an isolated construction-related issue, explaining that the project had been carefully designed and executed, except for the two columns that failed to handle the load. FDNY Chief John Esposito echoed that assessment, saying the building's design makes a widespread collapse unlikely and that any failure would likely remain confined to a specific area.

Surprising fact
Concerns about the building's safety had surfaced well before Tuesday's incident. City officials began receiving complaints about hazardous conditions as early as the spring of 2025. Records cited by the publication mention falling debris and two worker injuries during construction last year. Since July 2025, the city's Department of Buildings has also issued more than $32,000 in fines to the project's general contractor, largely for construction safety violations.

What do we know about the building?
The high-rise stands on East 42nd Street in Midtown Manhattan, just a short distance from Grand Central Station. It served as Pfizer's headquarters beginning in 1961 after the company relocated from a nearby building. In 2016, Pfizer announced plans to sell the property and move to a new office location.

The building changed hands in 2018 when a group of investors, including David Werner, Alexandria Real Estate Equities, Deutsche Bank, and the State of Wisconsin Investment Board, purchased it for a reported $363.5 million. In 2024, Werner and Metro Loft Management revealed plans to transform the former office tower into a residential building with approximately 1,500 apartments. At the time, Manhattan Borough President Mark Levine described the project as the largest office-to-residential conversion ever proposed in New York City. Interior demolition began the same year, with construction expected to be completed in 2027.

What have local officials said?
New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani said Tuesday morning that no injuries had been reported and that every construction worker had been safely accounted for. He also confirmed that around 400 students from a nearby school were evacuated as a precaution.

The FDNY stated that emergency personnel remained at the scene while investigators examined the reported structural issues. Meanwhile, the city's emergency notification system warned residents of traffic disruptions in the surrounding area and advised drivers and commuters to use alternative routes.
