A strong earthquake measuring 6.4 on the Richter scale struck eastern Indonesia late on Saturday, according to the US Geological Survey, though there were no immediate reports of injuries or damage and no tsunami warning was issued.
The quake occurred at 14:58 GMT, about 244 kilometers (152 miles) north-northwest of Tobelo, a town in Indonesia’s North Maluku province. It struck at a depth of around 52 kilometers (32 miles).
The tremor was first recorded at magnitude 6.7 before being downgraded to 6.5 and later revised to 6.4. Tobelo lies near the northern tip of Halmahera Island in eastern Indonesia. Authorities said there were no reports of casualties or significant destruction in the aftermath.
Indonesia’s Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency confirmed that the earthquake did not trigger a tsunami but advised residents to remain cautious due to the possibility of aftershocks, state news agency Antara reported.
