On the 23rd of March 2024 at 11:22 a.m. local time in Jakarta, a 6.5 magnitude earthquake struck off the coast of East Java province in Indonesia. According to the country’s meteorology, climatology, and geophysics agency, the quake’s epicenter was located 132km northeast of Tuban regency while its depth is equal to 10km.
Fortunately, there was no tsunami due to the seismic activity, and thus no tsunami alert was issued by the agency. Moreover, according to local authorities, the quake caused severe damage to the buildings in the area. However, no injuries were reported due to the incident.
It should be mentioned also that Indonesia, is an archipelagic nation, thus is prone to earthquakes due to its position along the Pacific Ring of Fire, a zone known for its volcanic and seismic activity.
