A part of Majerhat bridge in south Kolkata collapsed resulting in one fatality and trapping several people.

The bridge is located in the Alipore area which is very crowded. Constructed 40 years ago, it runs over the Majerhat Railway Station to connect the city center with Behala and other suburbs in the south. The incident occurred in Tuesday, 4 of September at 4:45 pm during rush hour. According to local media, 20-25 people were rescued while many are feared trapped under the debris. Rescue teams and the army have been deployed to aid the situation. The cause of the collapse has not been identified yet.

The police stated that the injured have been hospitalized while State minister Chandrima Bhattacharya said that about 5 more people have died, information that is not confirmed yet. Prime Minister Narendra Modi wrote on Twitter: "The collapse of a part of a bridge in Kolkata is deeply unfortunate. My thoughts are with the families of the victims. I pray that those who are injured recover at the earliest."

The incident is not unprecedented. Across India, there have been numerous bridge collapses the past years. The government needs to take measures in order to investigate the causes of such failures and prevent future collapses.
