Just a few days ago, the commission of ENR Global Best Projects Awards announced the winners of its annual contest. These awards are for outstanding structures around the world, such as buildings, airports and cultural centers with a unique architectural style. The organizers are preparing a celebration for winners at New York Hilton Midtown, on 11th of October2016which is expected to be, as always, a special spectacle.
The awards are shared in individual categories according to the type of structure. So, in the Cultural/Worship category, the award goes to Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Center. The center is located in Kallithea, a suburb of Athens in Greece. Designed by Renzo Piano Workshop (RPBW), it is a multifunctional center and environmental friendly. Its energy canopy affords 5,560 photovoltaics panels which can generate 2,280 kwh of electricity each year. The structure weighs 3,500 tons. It is supported by 30 steel columns whose diameter doesn’t exceed 30 cm, and its floors are made of marble from Dionisos. Furthermore, it is designed using the most advanced earthquake safety techniques and regulations, including seismic dampers.
The cultural center is expected to accommodate the Greek National Opera, the National Library which will afford 750,000 books of international bibliography, and a hillside park. The area of the complex is almost 23 hectares and the total value of the construction is estimated at 596,000 euro!
Stavros Niarchos cultural center combines the modern architecture with the environmental sustainability of structures, and is an innovative masterpiece for Greece and for all countries worldwide.
