One year after deadly Mississippi bridge collapse: hopes for reopening to restore traffic flow

Exactly one year ago, the small town of D’Lo, Mississippi, was shaken by a devastating bridge collapse that claimed the lives of three construction workers and left four others critically injured. The Strong River bridge on Highway 149 gave way on October 16, 2024, marking a tragic day for the local community.

The collapse prompted immediate media coverage, with 3 On Your Side broadcasting live from the scene. The Mississippi Department of Transportation identified TL Wallace Construction as the lead contractor responsible for the project. In the aftermath, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration launched an investigation, which concluded in April. OSHA issued four workplace safety violations against the company, resulting in fines totaling over $66,000.

For many residents, the events of that day remain vivid, particularly for employees at D’Lo Water Park, which sits adjacent to the bridge. Park manager Patricia Smith recalled hearing a “real loud boom” and witnessing the swift response from local authorities. It should be noted that the tragic incident underscored the danger and disruption caused by the collapse to both residents and local businesses.

Prior to the accident, crews were replacing the Strong River bridge along with four other bridges along Highway 149. Mayor Berry emphasized the importance of reopening the bridge to restore traffic flow and support the local economy. “It will sure help alleviate traffic out of D’Lo because our streets are really taking a beating with everyone cutting through town,” he explained.
