Two people lost their lives and two others injured following the collapse of a section of an under-construction bridge in the Netherlands on Wednesday 21st of February. The incident occurred in Lochem, a city approximately 80 miles east of Amsterdam.
As it was stated, the workers were positioning a large metal arch onto the bridge framework when it collapsed. More specifically, the arch was being lifted by a crane when a sudden loud noise was heard. Journalist Nieke Hoitink observed the complete arch oscillating and eventually collapsing.
A regional security organization confirmed the fatalities and the injuries due to the incident. Furthermore, the organization expressed sympathy to the victims' families and announced that investigations into the accident's cause are underway as the reason for the collapse is not clear. It should be stated that these types of accidents are rare in the Netherlands, a country known for its safety regulations.
