North Carolina: a pedestrian bridge collapses, video reveals the arches collapsing

The 40-ton arches that topped a bridge collapsed after strong winds and storms on February 18 in Hickory, North Carolina. A new video shows it happening.

The incident happened overnight, and no one was injured. “We are saddened by this unfortunate event,” said Mayor Hank Guess in a statement. “Thankfully, no injuries were reported and collateral damage to the surrounding area appears minimal. We look forward to reopening this section of the City Walk.”

There is an investigation underway into why the bridge collapsed. City Walk contractor Neill Grading & Construction and engineering firm John Wood Group PLC have been contacted and are currently assessing the damage, according to Guess.

He also addressed the financial implications of the recently opened City Walk, saying the arch contract was not closed out, and cost $750,000. "A performance bond and warranty are in place to cover all aspects of the City Walk project and to protect the public’s financial investment," Guess stated.
