A huge magnitude 8.2 earthquake struck Alaska, on Wednesday July 28th 8:15 p.m., 91 kilometers (56 miles) east southeast of Perryville. The quake hypocenter was about 46 kilometers (29 miles) below the ocean floor as the U.S. Geological Survey reported.
Within half an hour, two other earthquakes occurred in the same area with magnitudes of 6.2 and 5.6.
The preliminary seismic data that have been recorded until now, indicate that the earthquake must have been widely felt by everyone near the epicenter.
Thus, the US National Tsunami Warning Center issued warnings for South Alaska and the Alaska Peninsula, from Hinchinbrook Entrance, 90 miles (144.84 kilometers) east of Seward, to Unimak Pass, and for the Aleutian Islands, from Unimak Pass, 80 miles (128.75 kilometers) northeast of Unalaska, to Samalga Pass, Alaska, which is 30 miles (48.28 kilometers) southwest of Nikolski.
A tsunami warning issued for Hawaii was later canceled. Only a minor tsunami was confirmed with no significant impact for some coasts in South Alaska and the Alaska Peninsula, the U.S. Tsunami Warning System reported. As a consequence, the original tsunami alerts were canceled although scientists continued to monitor the situation following the large earthquake event.
