An 7.2-magnitude earthquake hits the Eastern Aleutian Islands.

An earthquake with a magnitude of 7.2 struck near the Eastern Aleutian Islands, raising concerns about a possible tsunami for coastal communities in Alaska. However, there have been no immediate reports of significant damage or injuries.

According to the United States Geological Survey, the earthquake occurred at 10:48 p.m. on July 15 with a magnitude of 7.2. The epicenter was located approximately 55 miles southwest of Sand Point in the Aleutian Islands, about 615 miles southwest of Anchorage. The tremors were widely felt across the Aleutians, Alaska Peninsula, and Cook Inlet, as reported by the Alaska Earthquake Center. Furthermore, several aftershocks, with the largest measuring 5.0 in magnitude, were recorded in the same area shortly after the initial earthquake.

Initially, a tsunami warning was issued for an area stretching from 40 miles west of Homer to 80 miles northeast of Unalaska. However, the warning was later downgraded to an advisory and eventually canceled shortly before 1 a.m. on Sunday. Tsunami waves reaching a maximum height of 0.5 feet were observed at King Cove and Sand Point at 12:18 a.m.

Authorities are advising those in tsunami-prone areas to wait for local emergency officials to declare it safe before returning to hazard zones. Although small changes in sea level are still possible, there are no significant threats reported at this time.

Officials in Cold Bay confirmed that they have assessed the community for damage and found no major issues or threats to residents. The condition of docks and piers was a primary concern, but it appears that no significant repairs are required. Further assessment will be conducted by Cold Bay officials tomorrow.
