Around 200 people have lost their lives, and widespread devastation has occurred in Nepal due to flooding and landslides caused by heavy monsoon rains. Moreover, more than 100 people were injured, according to police reports while authorities stated that several people remained missing.
State media reports that 10,000 police officers, along with volunteers and army personnel, have been deployed for search and rescue operations and the Nepalese government has advised people to avoid unnecessary travel. Air travel was also impacted on Friday and Saturday, with numerous domestic flights delayed or canceled.
Floods and landslides are common in Nepal during the monsoon season, but scientists warn that rainfall events are becoming more intense due to climate change. A warmer atmosphere holds more moisture, and warmer ocean temperatures can intensify storm systems, making them more unpredictable.
