A 5.2 magnitude earthquake hit Nepal on Sunday with its epicenter situated near Bharatpur. Nepal's National Earthquake Monitoring and Research Center initially reported a magnitude of 6.1, while the U.S. Geological Survey recorded a magnitude of 5.2 with a depth of 24.7km. Three more tremors with magnitudes of 4.3, 4.1, and 3.8 occurred in the same region later on Sunday, according to the India Center for Seismology.
Earthquakes are common in Nepal's mountainous terrain. For example, a notable incident is the devastating 7.8 magnitude earthquake in 2015 that claimed the lives of around 9,000 people and caused extensive damage to approximately one million structures.
The current quake, along with subsequent aftershocks, caused damage on at least twenty homes in the hilly Dhading district near Nepal's capital. The seismic activity also triggered a landslide in the area, though specific details were not immediately available. The affected region is located approximately 60km to the west of Kathmandu.
The Press Trust of India news agency reported that these tremors were also experienced in the Bagmati and Gandaki provinces, causing panic among the population. In the Gorkha district, which borders Dhading, one woman sustained injuries when she jumped from a two-story building.
