A landslide, triggered by intense rainfall, occurred in northwest Colombia claiming the lives of at least 36 people and causing injuries to numerous others. The tragic event happened on Friday afternoon, on a heavily traveled highway. The affected roadway, linking the cities of Quibdo and Medellin in the Pacific province of Choco, was engulfed due to the landslide.
The exact cause of the landslides is yet to be determined, but it has been reported that the region experienced intense and sustained rainfall. Earlier landslides had already disrupted traffic on the highway, prompting approximately 60 people to abandon their vehicles and find shelter in a nearby house, which tragically succumbed to the landslide.
Unfortunately, the latest count reveals 36 confirmed fatalities while 7 others remain unaccounted for in the aftermath of these tragic events. Images on social media and television channels depict severely damaged cars, some destroyed and fallen rocks because of the incident.
