Bridge collapse in Patras, Greece: at least one fatality and several injuries

A part of a bridge collapsed on the ring road in Patras on Sunday. Tragically, this incident resulted in the loss of one life and left eight people injured, according to a statement from the fire brigade. It was also reported by a fire brigade official that the bridge had been closed the previous week due to ongoing reconstruction works.

In the past, the bridge had encountered structural issues, prompting repair efforts that began in 2021. Recently, the Olympia Odos motorway had closed the road to carry out demolition works, resulting in no traffic passing over the bridge at the time of the collapse.

Fire brigade rescuers were immediately deployed to the scene to assist and extract any individuals who might have been trapped under the debris.

Footage from Greek media revealed that a significant portion of the bridge was completely destroyed, with concrete slabs and iron rods scattered about. Numerous rescuers were tirelessly working at the location to aid in the recovery efforts.
