Almost a year has passed since the catastrophic collapse of Baltimore’s Francis Scott Key Bridge, which led to 6 fatalities. Last Tuesday, Maryland officials announced that they are planning the replacement of the bridge with a taller, more resilient structure which will be designed to withstand ship collisions. The completion of the bridge is anticipated by 2028.
The new project for the replacement of the bridge, which will be the first cable-stayed bridge of the state, is estimated to cost $1.7 billion. The design will include two towers with cables extending down to the deck, giving the structure a more modern aesthetic. It is noted that the bridge will be taller, allowing greater clearance for maritime traffic and accommodating larger vessels. Moreover, it will include advanced protection technology to safeguard against ship collisions. The bridge's span will be equal to 2,230 feet, to position the primary support pillars in shallower waters away from the main navigation channels.
The new bridge will redefine Baltimore’s skyline as a symbol of resilience, progress, and economic strength. To that end, state officials are committed to rebuilding it and, last August, awarded a $73 million contract to Kiewit Infrastructure for the project’s first phase, which includes design and preliminary work ahead of full-scale construction.
The federal government is committed to covering the full cost of rebuilding, and Congress has approved funding for the project. At present, officials are awaiting insurance payouts and damage settlements. In their statement, they acknowledged the bridge's significance as both a landmark and a key transportation route. Overall, the demolition of the remaining damaged sections is scheduled for early spring, followed by the start of construction on the new bridge.
