An under-construction building collapsed in Delhi’s Shahdara: 5 injured, many trapped

A horizontal beam in a four-storey residential building under construction in Shahdara’s Jwala Nagar collapsed on Tuesday morning, trapping several people and leaving at least five injured, according to police. The incident occurred around 11:30 am, when the Vivek Vihar police station received two emergency calls reporting that part of a house had caved in and people were buried under the debris.

When police and rescue teams reached the spot, they discovered that the roof of a newly built hall on the third floor had fallen. Officers said the family had been carrying out construction work on the upper levels when the structure suddenly gave way.

Avinish, a resident, told officers that the freshly laid roof collapsed without warning, trapping both workers and family members. Four people, including a woman, were rescued from the rubble and taken to the hospital. Police reported that the injured comprised two members of the family and two labourers involved in the construction. A fifth victim, identified as Rajesh — a tenant in the building — suffered minor injuries.

Authorities have cordoned off the area and begun a detailed inspection of the structure. Police said the incident is under investigation, including whether proper safety guidelines were followed during construction.
