A parking garage collapsed in Manhattan: one fatality

A parking garage, which was a four-story building located on Ann Street in Lower Manhattan, collapsed on Tuesday. The collapse caused the death of one person and the injury of five others; four of the injured were taken to a hospital and were in stable condition. According to records from the New York City Department of Buildings, the building had six open building violations, three of which were classified as hazardous.

Officials are still investigating the cause of the collapse, which is believed to be a "structural collapse." The Manhattan district attorney's office is also investigating the incident while the fire department had to use a robotic dog and drones to search the unstable building for people. Everyone was believed to be accounted for.

At least $2,200 has been paid by the building's owners in fines stemming from the three hazardous violations, which date back to 2003, 2009, and 2013. The building, which was built in the 1920s and converted to a parking garage in 1957, has been cited for 64 violations since 1976.

Little Man Parking operates the garage, but there has been no response from the operator yet. One witness described the event as surreal and saw cars falling into a hole in the middle of the garage. The area around the collapse will remain closed for some time. The Department of Buildings engineers will continue to investigate possible reasons for the collapse.
