A newly inaugurated skyscraper, standing at a height of 330m, is Tokyo's latest landmark. The Mori JP tower, having 64 floors designated for shops, offices, and residences, now holds the distinction of being Japan's tallest building, surpassing the previous record held by the Abeno Harukas tower in Osaka. Following the opening ceremony, visitors swarmed the skyscraper to shop and dine. There is optimism that the tower would attract foreign visitors and revitalize central Tokyo.
The tower is situated within the Azabudai Hills complex, spanning 8 hectares, and undergoing redevelopment by the Mori Building Company in the Toranomon and Azabudai districts of Minato Ward. The expansive complex accommodates offices for 20,000 workers, residences for 3,500 people, and features a digital art museum created by an award-winning art group, alongside other cultural amenities. In times of emergencies, e.g., natural disasters, the complex can serve as a shelter for approximately 3,600 people.
Naka Hiroki, representing Mori Building, expressed the hope that the complex will contribute to positioning Tokyo as a globally competitive city. However, the reign of the Mori JP tower as Japan's tallest tower is expected to be short-lived, as the capital witnesses a surge in skyscraper construction. A tower scheduled for completion near Tokyo Station in 2028 is planned to reach a height of 385m.
