It is a fact that the 38-mile train tunnel that links Switzerland and Italy has finally been completed and it is scheduled to be in operation in June 2016. Trains will be able to travel between Zurich and Milan in just two hours 50 minutes.
The Gotthard Tunnel had a cost of about £6.5bn and it took 20 years to be constructed with 2000 workers to work around the clock and 8 workers died during its construction. Boring machines could cut through up to 100 feet of rock every day. Trains can run in both directions since there are two parallel tunnels.
Renzo Simoni, CEO of AlpTransit Gotthard, told Geneva's newspaper TDG: "After opening the tunnel, it will be the safest stretch of the Swiss railway network." During October the first safety tests through the tunnel will take place.
