The structural design work for Phase 2 of the Gurugram Metro project is presently in progress under the supervision of Gurugram Metro Rail Limited (GMRL), according to officials. This phase will consist of 13 new stations, connecting important localities such as Sector 4, Sector 5, Sector 7, Palam Vihar, Palam Vihar Extension, and Bajghera Road. The expansion aims to improve metro connectivity in residential and commercial areas, providing better access and reducing road congestion in the city.
A senior official from the Haryana Mass Rapid Transport Corporation (HMRTC) revealed that Systra, a French consulting agency overseeing the project’s design work, has almost completed the structural and architectural designs for all 13 metro stations. These designs will soon be submitted to GMRL and HMRTC for review and approval. Alongside this, alignment planning for the underpass, grade separator, and the Leg 1 drain on Major Sushil Aima Marg is being finalized. The proposed underpasses on Station Road and Sheetla Mata Road are also under design review, and the GMDA team has already carried out a site inspection to assess ground conditions.
According to HMRTC officials, construction for Phase 2 is projected to be completed by 2030 or 2031. The initial development focus will be on extending the metro line up to Sector 9 and the Gurugram railway station. When asked about reports suggesting the Haryana government might change the plan from an elevated to an underground route, officials chose not to comment but mentioned that an official announcement would be made soon. The estimated cost of Phase 2 is between ₹11,000 crore and ₹12,000 crore, and the tendering process will begin once the structural design phase concludes.
A GMRL official further disclosed that five underpasses are planned to accompany the metro construction in this phase, located at Railway Road, Sector 5 Chowk, Bajghera Road, Rezangla Chowk, and Old Delhi Road. However, if the project transitions to an underground design, costs could nearly double, and construction timelines may be considerably extended. The official added that once the design report is finalized and submitted to the Haryana government, the state will have to carefully evaluate the financial implications and possible delays before making a final decision on the project’s structure.
