On Thursday 11th of April, a wooden pedestrian walkway in Gabriel Dumont Park caught fire. The Saskatoon firefighters reported that the fire caused significant damage to the structure. According to the statement of Saskatoon Fire Department, crews responded to the park at 8:36a.m. and were able to extinguish the fire by 10:00a.m.
While the exact cause of the fire is still under investigation, the fire department noted the presence of signs indicating an abandoned encampment near the area where the fire occurred. Moreover, the city’s facilities department will collaborate with the fire investigator to determine the cause of the fire, assessing if any negligence or wrongdoing contributed to the incident.
The fire investigator will examine the scene for signs of arson, electrical malfunctions, or other potential triggers of the fire to identify its origin. This information is crucial for assigning responsibility for the damage and implementing measures to prevent similar incidents in the future. This collaboration ensures that prompt and effective repairs are undertaken, prioritizing public safety, and restoring the walkway to its former condition.
As a result of the incident, the walkway sustained severe structural damage and will remain closed until a thorough assessment can be conducted and repairs can be completed. Pedestrians are urged to avoid the affected area and to follow the signs which direct them to use an alternate route until the walkway is deemed safe for use again.
