Building collapses in north Delhi due to fire

A big fire started on Wednesday inside a three-story private building on Roshanara Road in North Delhi. According to the authorities, the cause of the fire remains unknown while more than 100 firefighters were dispatched to the scene. The fire was controlled after hours.

The building's collapse was caused by the fire spreading from the ground floor to the entire structure. Three firefighters were injured due to the collapse and they were promptly brought to a neighborhood hospital.

Images taken on the scene demonstrate how the fire has moved from the first to the top storey. The roof and upper part of the building collapsed due to the fragile construction. Locals claimed that the smoke entered their houses and that the fire was caused by a short circuit.

The head of Delhi Fire Services, Atul Garg, reported, “A fire call was received around 11.50 am. We were told that the fire started at the Jaipur Golden Transport company’s office on Roshanara Road. There is also a godown. Total 18 fire tenders have been rushed to the site.”

The owner of a local transportation company, Gurnek Singh stated that “There are tempos and other vehicles parked at the office. The fire must have started around 11 am. We later saw a blaze coming from the window and a huge smoke cloud above the building. My workers and I tried to douse the fire with our extinguishers but it had spread to other floors.”

The fire started at a godown full with cars loaded with apparel. The security guy at the office made a call to the fire department. Shortly after the fire seized possession of the building, it fell. More specifically, authorities said there was a godown and several small offices at the Jaipur Golden Transport headquarters. Residents and staff of neighboring buildings were evacuated as the fire grew in magnitude. According to a senior officer, up to three structures may have developed fissures as a result of the fire and collapse.
