A major roadway in Rock County remains shut down indefinitely after severe storms on Friday caused the collapse of the Rockport Bridge. Motorists traveling along Rockport Road are being forced to turn back as the route is no longer passable.
Peter Parker, a supervisor for the Town of Rock, urged residents to remain calm during the disruption. Footage released by the town shows floodwaters surging over the bridge before it collapsed. Local officials, including representatives from nearby municipalities, are assessing the extent of the damage and determining the scope, cost, and timeline for repairs. Parker noted that coordination with the town and city of Janesville will be necessary to develop repair estimates and move the project forward.
Beyond infrastructure damage, many residents are also dealing with significant property impacts. In Janesville, Laurie Gutoski reported that flooding affected four rooms in her basement, prompting crews to remove damaged materials and open walls to prevent mold growth. She explained that workers drilled into affected areas, removed drywall, and began mold remediation efforts.
Gutoski is now facing the financial burden largely on her own following the recent loss of her husband. She estimates cleanup costs between $6,500 and $8,500, noting that insurance will not cover the expenses. Additional repairs, including replacing carpeting, drywall, and molding, are expected to increase the total cost.
