The roof of the AZ Alkmaar club stadium partially collapsed as a result of strong winds.
The house of the football team AZ Alkmaar is located in the province of North Holland, in the Netherlands. It was constructed in 2006 and its capacity is about 17,000 people.
On Saturday, August 10, 2019, a large section of the roof suddenly collapsed but, fortunately, no one was injured as the stadium was empty. The team had its daily training session indoors due to the weather conditions.
Officials were shocked as the incident came like a bolt from the blue. Authorities will conduct a detailed investigation to pinpoint the causes of the collapse and the stadium will not host any games until its completely safe for people. "This surprised us all. We are very shocked but especially happy that there was no human suffering. In the coming days, we will conduct a study with experts in this field. Only when that investigation has been done can we elaborate on the matter. It is much too early for that now." Robert Eenhoorn, former professional football player and general director of the club, stated.
AZ Alkmaar will host 2 home games, one with the Ukrainian FC Mariupol for a Europa League (an annual football club competition organized by UEFA) third-round qualifier game on August 15 and another with FC Groningen for the National Championship of Netherlands (Eredivisie), 3 days later. Officials have not yet announced whether the stadium will have been repaired until then. "No matches will be played in the stadium if the situation is not safe. As soon as more is clear about our upcoming duels, we will report that as soon as possible", Mr. Eenhoorn added.
In 2011, a similar failure occurred in Fc Twente's stadium killing 2 construction workers and injuring 13 more.
