Pont Bodfel: New bridge opened after a storm damaged the old crossing

After sustaining damage from a storm in 2019, the foundations of Pont Bodfel, a bridge that connects Pwllheli and Penllyn in Gwynedd, became unusable for traffic.

Today, four years later and with a £1.2m investment, a new bridge named Bodefail, suggested by a competition winner, has opened for vehicles while the old bridge, built in 1805, will now be reserved for walkers and cyclists.

The new 17-meter long and three-meter high concrete single arc bridge is expected to make a significant difference as the old one was narrow and not designed for modern traffic.

The opening ceremony was attended by politicians and residents, with traffic lights still in place while the final road work is completed ahead of the national Eisteddfod in nearby Boduan in August.
