Residents and business owners in Bromsgrove have been left shaken after part of a building on The Strand in Worcestershire collapsed on Sunday morning. Bricks fell onto the pavement at around 10:07 GMT, prompting the closure of nearby roads and footpaths and the evacuation of surrounding businesses.
West Mercia Police confirmed that no one was injured and said the road and footpath from The Strand towards the Norton Collection Museum would remain closed overnight while experts assess the building for further structural risks. Council contractors are continuing to monitor the site.
Richard Edge, who has owned the property for 45 years and lives above his shop, Midland Waterlife, said he was unaware of the collapse when it happened and only discovered the damage after waking up to find a pile of bricks outside.
People working nearby described their shock and concern, particularly about the impact on long-standing local businesses. Emily Dixon, who works at Star Legal Solicitors opposite the building, said the incident was unsettling and added that trading conditions were already difficult for small businesses.
There are also worries about wider structural consequences. Ross Howarth, who runs a recruitment firm next door, said he was relieved the collapse happened when no one was passing by, but warned that the two buildings share structural beams and that visible bowing in the roof could pose a risk if further collapse occurs.
