New U.S.-Canada bridge faces further delay before official launch

The long-awaited Gordie Howe International Bridge, which will connect Canada and the United States, will not open as previously expected. Although a ribbon-cutting ceremony had been scheduled, officials announced that the launch has been postponed while both countries work through remaining issues.

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney downplayed the delay, describing it as a matter of resolving technical details rather than a major problem. He said the United States requested additional time, and Canada agreed that it was better to address any outstanding concerns before opening the crossing. Officials have not yet provided a new opening date.

The bridge, which links Windsor, Ontario, with Detroit, Michigan, has been under construction since 2018 and has faced several setbacks over the years. The COVID-19 pandemic slowed progress, while recent political disagreements between the two countries have also added uncertainty around the project. Earlier this year, President Donald Trump threatened to block the bridge’s opening unless Canada gave the United States a greater stake in the crossing.

In Windsor, Mayor Drew Dilkens said he was informed that both the opening ceremony and the bridge launch had been cancelled but was not told why. He said that, because the bridge appeared ready for use, he believed political factors could be involved, although officials have not confirmed the reason for the delay.

The project has attracted controversy for years, particularly from the owners of the nearby Ambassador Bridge, who argued that the new crossing would threaten their toll business. Supporters say the Gordie Howe International Bridge is important because it will improve traffic flow, strengthen trade links and provide an additional route across the Detroit River if the Ambassador Bridge is disrupted.

The postponement comes at a time when relations between Canada and the United States remain strained. Trade disputes, tariffs and Trump’s comments about Canada have created tension between the two countries. These disagreements have also affected travel patterns, with fewer Canadians travelling south of the border in recent months.

Despite the delay, local leaders remain optimistic about the bridge’s future impact. They believe it will create jobs, support economic growth and encourage stronger connections between communities on both sides of the border. Dilkens has also said he hopes that once the bridge opens, it can serve as a symbol of cooperation and help ease some of the friction that has developed between the two long-time allies.
