A five-storey building under construction collapsed on Monday 18th of March around midnight in Kolkata's Garden Reach vicinity, causing the death of at least 10 people and many injured, while others are still missing under the debris as the local authorities stated.
In addition, the mayor of Kolkata stated that the construction of the building was illegal, due to the fact that it was unauthorized, and no legal permit had been granted, therefore multiple reasons might have led the structure to collapse. These types of incidents are common in the area, because of the illegal constructions.
The mayor also, emphasized that the rescue operations started immediately by Kolkata Police disaster management units and NDRF at the location with gas cutters and other equipment to facilitate the clearance of debris in order to save the people that were trapped underneath.
Moreover, local authorities announced that the constructor of the building has already been arrested, and he will face stringent legal measures.
