Hayward Baker works on award-winning public works project in Macomb County, Michigan.
15 Mile Sewer Repair project was recognized with multiple awards following successful year-long recovery in the wake of a sewer collapse in Macomb County, Michigan.
The Romeo Arm Interceptor is an 11-feet-diameter wastewater pipeline part of the Macomb Interceptor Drain Drainage District in Macomb County, Michigan, serving approximately a half million residents, 40,000 businesses, 11 communities, and the Selfridge Air National Guard Base.
A sinkhole developed along 15 Mile Road between Hayes Road and Moravian Drive on December 24, 2016 measuring approximately 100 feet wide by 200 feet long and 10 feet deep. Presumed to have resulted from ground loss caused by fines infiltrating the sewer through cracks or joints in the pipe, the sinkhole continued to expand with the potential to become an environmental disaster.
Hayward Baker performed compaction grouting to densify the loosened granular soils on either side of the sewer and stabilize ground lost as a result of the sewer collapse. Responding under emergency status, Hayward Baker crews completed this work in about a month.
