A recently completed artificial island within the broader infrastructure linkage across the Pearl River Delta estuary has opened for public tours, marking a milestone in the region’s major transportation project. The island is part of the Shenzhen‑Zhongshan Link, which spans the estuary via two man-made islands, a submarine tunnel and two bridges.
Located on the eastern side of the estuary near Shenzhen — just south of Shenzhen Bao’an International Airport — the island covers around 343,800 square metres and will host the sea-tunnel access points, emergency docks and power-supply facilities.
The broader link is designed to connect the eastern and western banks of the Pearl River, facilitating faster movement between cities including Zhongshan and Shenzhen, and forming part of the infrastructure for the Greater Bay Area.
With the artificial island opening to tours, officials intend to showcase the scale and technical achievement of the project, while work continues on tunnel, bridge and marine access elements that remain under construction.
