A 5.4 magnitude earthquake hit on Thursday 14th of March 2024 the border area between Montenegro and Bosnia. Its epicenter was 30km from the town of Niksic (western Montenegro) and about 25km from the Bosnian town of Bileca. Fortunately, no injuries have been reported.
As the local media stated, the quake caused structural damage in Montenegro and neighboring areas as several cracks in house walls were observed. Moreover, several landslides were reported on motorways in the Carodja region. In the southeastern Bosnian town of Bileca, authorities took precautionary measures by closing schools and assessing potential damage in the area.
The main quake shook nearly the entire Balkan peninsula as Media reports stated. They mentioned that the phenomenon was also felt in Hungary and Serbia. It should be mentioned that there have been smaller earthquakes recurring throughout the Balkan region in recent months. Furthermore, the spokesman of Montenegro's Institute for Hydrology and Seismology stated that at least 30 aftershocks followed the main one.
