A student residence building collapsed in Doornfontein, Johannesburg, on Monday. According to Johannesburg Emergency Management Services spokesperson Robert Mulaudzi, four people were injured in the incident. Three of the injured were working near the building at the time, while the fourth has been confirmed as a student who lives in the residence.
Mulaudzi said emergency teams are still on site to ensure that no one remains inside the building. However, information gathered when responders arrived indicated that all occupants had already been accounted for. He added that there is no sign that anyone is trapped, but rescue teams are continuing to clear the rubble to eliminate any uncertainty.
Residents of the building reported hearing a loud explosion-like sound followed by smoke filling the structure. Emergency services were quickly dispatched to the scene, and residents were evacuated as a precaution.
