An earthquake struck western Nepal on Tuesday, according to a local official. One person is dead and two more were injured while at least 40 houses were damaged. Cattle and farm animals were also buried by the earthquake.
The magnitude of the earthquake was 5.9, according to Nepal's National Earthquake Monitoring and Research Center while the United States Geological Survey gives the magnitude equal to 5.6. The tremor occurred at about 2:43 p.m. local time (08:58 p.m. GMT), and buildings in New Delhi, the capital of India, temporarily shook. The earthquake's epicentre was in the rugged and isolated Bajura area, 400 kilometers (250 miles) west of Kathmandu.
Since many of the communities in the district are walkable, details were still hazy, but army and police rescues had already been sent, according to Khaki. However, Indian users on social media reported experiencing powerful tremors that rattled ceiling fans and other fixtures. Deb Bahadur Rokaya, a village administrator from Gaumul, said that the deceased woman had ascended a hill to gather fodder when she was killed by a stone that fell after becoming loose due to the tremors.
"The remoteness of our area makes it difficult to get full information. We hope to assess all damages and casualties by tomorrow, district chief Pushkar Khadka said, adding that most of the mud- and stone-built homes in the affected communities were either completely destroyed or cracked.
Nepal, which has the majority of the world's highest peaks and is covered in mountains, experiences earthquakes frequently. Recently, an earthquake of magnitude 5.6 that struck Nepal's western district of Doti in November claimed the lives of six people. Another massive earthquake of magnitude 7.8 that rocked the nation in April 2015 claimed the lives of almost 9,000 people destroying more than 500,000 houses.
