According to a new study, issued by the Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat (CTBUH), China's skyscrapers construction dropped by 38% in 2019.
During 2018, a new record for the most skyscrapers built by a single country within a year was set as 90 new buildings with a height of more than 200 meters were established in China. However, in 2019, a reduction of 38% was observed as only 56 such buildings were constructed. Still, this number of skyscrapers is 4 times more than those constructed in the United States.
According to Daniel Safarik, editor-in-chief of the CTBUH's journal and co-author of the report, there are multiple factors that this declining tension could be attributed to. Maybe officials are gradually changing their preference in tall buildings and focus on developing smaller facilities in less populated cities. "There may have been some effort from the top to say 'let's cool things down a bit,'" Safarik stated.
According to Ada Choi, head of CBRE, a real estate and investment firm, slowing construction down was a logical outcome after many record-breaking years that preceded. "Mainland China has already dominated the list of the tallest buildings in the world...and all of them were completed in the past four years. Considering the time needed to plan, construct and promote a super-tall building, I don't see an issue of having (fewer of them) in the coming years for those cities that already had one recently," Choi stated.
At the same time, skyscrapers completed in 2019 were more than those in 2018 for the rest of the world. What's interesting is that due to the impact of China's skyscraper construction, the world's total percentage decreased by 14%. Despite the decline, China still accounts for about half of the total new tall buildings completed worldwide.
The 2 tallest buildings ever built in Africa were completed this year. The first one, the Great Mosque of Algiers, is located in Algeria and reaches a height of 265 meters while the second one, Leonardo skyscraper, is located in Johannesburg, South Africa, and reaches a height of 228 meters.
Meanwhile, Europe also accomplished its tallest skyscraper (the Lakhta Center in St. Petersburg, Russia) during this year that reaches a height of 462 meters.
