A 3-story building that was under construction collapsed killing 7 and injuring 14 people in Monterrey, Nuevo León of Mexico.
The construction, that was designed to house a shopping mall, collapsed on Thursday, 11 of October 2018. It is believed that all the victims were construction workers. Rescue teams searched for survivors under the debris while one person is considered missing. Jaime Rodríguez Calderón, Nuevo León Governor, visited the site and stated that medical and psychological care will be provided to the families of the victims.
According to Miguel Ángel Perales Hernández, Nuevo León Civil Protection deputy director, 3 concrete slabs collapsed due to unknown reasons. Municipal authorities said that construction works were conducted without a building permit as the project was suspended after a wall collapse about a year ago. Luis Bortoni, Monterrey urban development secretary, pointed out that the construction is "completely illegal."
Those who are responsible for the tragic incident are both the director and the owner of the project. They are about to face criminal charges, including negligent homicide while authorities have not yet managed to track them down.
