- The prime aim of this research project is to evaluate the performance of confined masonry walls under in-plane shear with a view to contributing to the national masonry design standard through a set of design clauses. This aim stems from the criticisms of the current provisions of the in-plane shear capacity equations in the Australian Masonry Standard AS3700 (2011) being highly non-conservative. This PhD thesis is an attempt to address this gap in the knowledge through systematic investigation of the key parameters that affects the in-plane shear strength of the masonry walls through laboratory experiments and extensive finite element analyses.

- The thin layer mortared concrete masonry is an emerging construction system. Therefore,
there exists a need for data on the response of this form of masonry construction subject to
various states of stress so that thin layer mortared masonry could be practiced as a legitimate
structural system. This PhD aims at developing datasets for thin layer mortared concrete
masonry through systematic experimental and numerical studies.
A range of concrete units (Solid, full size hollow and half scale) with varying dimensions and
sizes have been used to construct thin layer mortared concrete masonry specimens to truly
reflect the field practices. A micro finite element model incorporating the contact surfaces
between the units and mortar layers has been used to link the data from specimens of

- The term Ultra-High Performance Concrete (UHPC) refers to a relatively new class of advanced cementitious composite materials whose mechanical and durability properties far surpass those of conventional concrete. This class of concrete has been demonstrated to facilitate solutions that address specific problems in the U.S. highway bridge infrastructure. Initial material development research on UHPC began more than two decades ago. First structural deployments began in the late 1990s. First field deployments in the U.S. highway transportation infrastructure began in 2006. For this study, UHPC-class materials are defined as cementitious-based composite materials with discontinuous fiber reinforcement that exhibit compressive strength above 21.7 ksi (150 MPa), pre- and post-cracking tensile strength above 0.72 ksi (5 MPa), and enhanced durability via a discontinuous pore structure. The report documents the state of the art with regard to the research, development, and deployment of UHPC components within the U.S. highway transportation infrastructure. More than 600 technical articles and reports covering research and applications using UHPC have been published in English in the last 20 years, with many more published in other languages. The report includes information about materials and production, mechanical properties, structural design and structural testing, durability and durability testing, and actual and potential applications. The report concludes with recommendations for the future direction for UHPC applications in the United States.

- We present in this paper MITC shell elements for large strain solutions of shell structures. While we focus on the 4-node element, the same formulation is also applicable to the 3-node element. Since the elements are formulated using three-dimensiona l continuum theory with the full three-dimensional constitutive behavior, they are referred to as 3D-shell elements. Specific contributions in this paper are that the elements are formulated usi ng two control vector s at each node to describe the large deformations, MITC tying and volume preserving conditions acting directly on the material fiber vectors to avoid shear locking, and a pressure interpolation to circumvent volumetric locking. Also, we present solutions to some large strain shell problems that represent valuable benchmark tests for any large strain shell analysis
capability.

- The objective in this presentation is to survey our recent research accomplishments to advance
the state of computational simulations in engineering and the sciences. We present our novel insights and recent advances in the analysis of transient and wave propagation problems, the simulation of large strain conditions of shells, the prediction of more accurate solutions using low-order elements, and the coupling of structures to general fluid flows and electromagnetic effects. At the conference, applications are given in the analysis of traditional structures and in the modeling of nano-structures, specifically, proteins and DNA
assemblies. Also, major challenges are outlined for further advances in the field.
