As reported by ETGovernment.com in India, Lieutenant General Rajeev Chaudhry, the Director General of Border Roads, recently inspected the construction of the Himank Air Dispatch Unit, slated to become world’s largest 3D printed campus. Lt. General Chaudhry commended the Border Road Organisation (BRO) for their successful efforts in strengthening road infrastructure, during his visit. He praised the accelerated completion of BRO projects, attributing it to technological advancements and increased budget allocations.
The Central Government has allocated a 2% budget increase for BRO projects in the current fiscal year. Additionally, plans are in motion to establish a BRO museum in Ladakh, featuring advanced 3D technology. Lt. General Chaudhry emphasized the collaboration between BRO and L&T Construction in developing the Himank Air Dispatch unit. This unit is notable for incorporating state-of-the-art 3D printing technology with the aim of creating a world-class facility.
The extensive 3D printed campus, which will cover 1.98 acres, will include accommodation for officers, junior commission officers, and other ranks. It will also house administrative buildings and storage facilities. The design of the establishment is carefully planned, adopting a Biophilic approach to integrate the landscape with the built environment through terraces, gardens, and balconies; hence contributing to the sustainability of the design.
Among the six building blocks in the facility, five are constructed using 3D printing technology, while one block is built with precast technology, combining a blend of innovative and traditional construction methods. Earlier this year, Kelvin6k, a company claiming to produce 'the world’s most affordable construction 3D printer,' used its "Made in India" system to print India’s first on-site building; it was a 300-square-foot office completed in just ten days.
